Minimizing vehicle accidents through FMVSS
Protecting the environment by minimizing vehicle accidents, injuries and fatalities - that is the goal of the FMVSS 111 standards. FMVSS stands for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, which prescribe minimum requirements for the USA. By using rear view camera systems, drivers rely too much on the system and neglect to look directly into the rear area. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this represents an additional risk of accidents, which is why the FMVSS 111 standards were issued.
In order to homologate cars for the American market, it is necessary to ensure that the rear view camera system functions according to NHTSA regulations. EVOMOTIV is the right contact for this and offers a range of certifications and tests that help achieve FMVSS compliance.
FMVSS 111 – Test standard for the American automotive market
2017 has EVOMOTIV a test procedure compliant with FMVSS 111 was developed and agreed with the US authorities, based on which the necessary approval tests for rear view camera systems can be carried out and evaluated. The necessary requirements for the test procedure to be developed were taken from FMVSS 111. Based on the information reviewed, the individual criteria were transferred to a test catalog. A corresponding test environment was also set up that meets the requirements of the FMVSS 111 bill. The various aspects of the test catalog are tested and documented within the test environment. Finally, an evaluation of the individual criteria is carried out and a corresponding final report is prepared based on the test results. Based on this evaluation, a clear recommendation is made for or against the approval of the system.

The following four tests are necessary to ensure clearance under US law:
• Field of view
The area behind the vehicle must be adequately covered
• Image size
The rear view camera image must be displayed in sufficient size
• Reaction time
The activation times of the rear view camera system must be observed
• Deactivation
The shutdown criteria for the rear view camera system must be met
KMVSS – test standard for the South Korean automotive market
Since 2009, vehicles imported into South Korea have had to go through a self-certification process. The “Korea Motor Vehicle Safety Standard” (KMVSS) is the most important document in this certification process. It defines, among other things, the technical characteristics of vehicles and safety standards.
In order to obtain the registration of motor vehicles for the South Korean automobile market, EVOMOTIV the test facility and implementation according to the Korean KMVSS 53-2 (“Korea Motor Vehicle Safety Standard”). Without this test, the export of motor vehicles to Korea is not possible, otherwise no approval will be granted. As with the vehicle test procedure according to the FMVSS 111 bill for the US market, the KMVSS 53-2 was EVOMOTIV a corresponding test procedure was developed. Here, too, the necessary requirements for the test procedure to be developed were recorded from KMVSS 53-2 and a test catalogue was created on the basis of the information reviewed. The points are checked within a test environment and a recommendation is made for or against the release of the system.
