“Technology is only a man’s thing…” or not. Just in time for International Women’s Day, we present you some very useful and technical inventions from the female population of the world.
The indicator
Florence Lawrence invented what was then known as a "direction indicator" 100 years ago. The Hollywood star also had a soft spot for cars and invented the first indicator, consisting of a pivoting arm. Over the following years, this developed into what we know today as indicators.
The windshield wiper
The very first windshield wiper, which was still operated manually, was patented by New Yorker Mary Anderson. The mechanical windshield wipers, consisting of a spring-loaded swing arm with a rubber blade, were operated with a lever next to the steering wheel.
Programming language and software
Grace Hopper played a key role in the development of the first programming language. COBOL, the “Common Business Oriented Language,” was created over 70 years ago and is still often used for computer programs today.
The ARM microprocessor
Sophie Wilson developed the ARM 32-bit RISC processor together with Steve Furber. It is installed in 95 percent of all smartphones.
Wireless technology
Actress and inventor at the same time. Hedy Lamarr invented the basis for wireless technologies such as Bluetooth. Known for her Hollywood films, she developed a radio remote control with the composer George Antheil. The system was patented for torpedoes but was never used there, but is now used in communication technologies.
Even today, technical achievements and professions are still more associated with men than with women. One reason for this is that women are less represented in technical professions. This must change. That is why we say: "Have courage, believe in yourselves, we can do it!".
