Autonomous driving is no longer a promise of the future – it is a reality in automotive development. For vehicles to reliably detect, interpret, and respond to complex environments, it requires much more than powerful sensors. What is crucial is holistic system development that integrates all technical, functional, and process-related aspects: systems engineering.
for the application technoloqy. Our in-house ExpertTalkseries, Andreas – specialist speaker for systems engineering at EVOMOTIV – Insights into his daily work, current projects and the role of systems engineering in the development of autonomous systems.

Systems Engineering in Focus
With over eight years of experience in vehicle development, Andreas now specializes in the product group of autonomous driving systems and functions. His work ranges from technical project support to the definition and application of development processes to knowledge transfer through workshops and training courses.
"Systems engineering forms the basis of the entire development of a system." This structured approach makes it possible to capture complex requirements early on, understand interactions, and thus develop viable, future-proof solutions. Systems engineering is an indispensable success factor, especially in the development of safety-critical functions.
Sensor technology for environmental detection and process competence
A central theme in Andreas' projects is the development of autonomous driving functions – specifically, creating the system architecture, with a focus on integrating functionalities with sensors for environment detection. The more precisely a vehicle perceives its surroundings, the more robustly assistance or automation functions can be implemented.
EVOMOTIV supports its customers along two key lines:
1. Process consulting
– Development and implementation of customized systems engineering and supporting processes
– Support in operational application in day-to-day project work (“lived processes”)
2. Technical implementation
– Development of functional architectures
– Description, modeling and integration of entire technical systems
This isn't just about process documents or system diagrams. It's about creating a structure that supports the team in their day-to-day work – with clear outputs, consistent methods, and complete traceability.
Transparency, traceability, quality
In current customer projects, the focus is strongly on standardizing development processes. The goal is to establish uniform working methods that are simultaneously flexible enough to integrate new technologies – for example, in the area of highly automated driving functions.
“You have to work in a comprehensible and transparent manner so that quality is measurable and reproducible.” This is how Andreas describes the basic requirements for making complex, safety-relevant systems manageable in the long term.
An example from practice
One project that stands out in particular was the pre-development and optimization of a sensor set for autonomous driving. The goal was to define the ideal combination of camera, radar, and lidar systems – depending on the intended application, architecture, and functional requirements.
“You can imagine it like Lego – you think about what the vehicle should be able to do and put the right building blocks together in a sensible way.”
This project is an example of the combination of technical know-how, process structure and creative engineering that Andreas and his team bring to customer projects.
Engineering with vision
Systems engineering is more than a method – it is the foundation for robust, scalable, and safe vehicle functions. With a well-thought-out approach to process consulting and technical implementation, EVOMOTIV its customers reliably on the way to the mobility of tomorrow.
Whether in the pre-development of autonomous driving functions or in the series integration of complex systems – with an interdisciplinary team, high methodological depth and a clear eye for quality, we are at EVOMOTIV a strong partner of the automotive industry.
